We forgot how cold winter can be,
make sure you are dressed warmly before you come to the barn. Frostbite can happen in no time at all.
Dressing for the Winter
Layers, layers, layers!
You will need layers, especially when the morning and afternoon temps can vary by 20 or more degrees. Bring a jacket to put over a hooded sweatshirt to help get you through the day. Two pair of pants can help as can warm, waterproof boots and a hat. Be sure to bring warm gloves, two pairs just in case one gets wet.
You should wear a pair of shoes with a low heel to keep your feet from sliding through the stirrups. If you are taking lessons you should wear a snug fitting shirt or a shirt you can tuck in so the instructor can clearly see your posture. A vest can sometimes work better for riding warmth than a coat or jacket.
It probalby isn't a bad idea to wear sunscreen if you are at the farm at the middle of the day.
